How to Write a Music Press Release (With a Template)

A press release is not an advert. It is a short document that gives journalists, bloggers and radio hosts everything they need to write about your release without asking you anything. Most are ignored because they are too long, too vague or full of praise.
What a music press release needs
- A headline that says who and what: "Mia Jensen shares new single 'Harbour Lights' ahead of debut EP".
- A first paragraph with the facts: artist, title, format, release date, label and one line about the sound.
- The story: one or two short paragraphs on why the song exists. Specific details beat big claims.
- A quote from the artist that sounds like a person.
- Context: previous releases, notable support, live dates. Only facts that can be checked.
- Links: private or public stream link, press photos, video and socials.
- Contact details for interviews.
Template
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (or "Embargoed until [date, time, time zone]")
[Artist] shares new [single/EP/album] '[Title]'
[City], [date]: [Artist], the [genre] [artist/band] from [place], releases '[Title]' on [release date] via [label or self-released]. [One sentence on the sound and the feeling.]
[Paragraph about the story: where it was written, what it is about, who produced it, one specific detail.]
"[Quote from the artist about the song, in their own words]," says [Artist].
[Short paragraph of context: earlier releases, radio play, shows, collaborations.]
Listen: [link] | Press photos: [link] | Video: [link]
Contact: [name], [email], [phone if you want calls]
Tips that make a difference
- One page. 300 to 400 words is enough.
- Write in the third person, so journalists can copy sentences.
- Replace adjectives with details. "Recorded in one night in a church in Bergen" is more interesting than "a breathtaking, unique sound".
- Use an embargo if you want coverage on release day rather than before.
- Send it three to four weeks before release, together with a short personal email, not as the email itself. See how to email blogs and curators.
Mistakes to avoid
- Attaching large audio files. Use a streaming link.
- Comparing yourself with very famous artists in every paragraph.
- Sending the same release to hundreds of addresses in one email.
- Missing basic facts: date, format or how to listen.
Pair the press release with an electronic press kit, and make sure your release is delivered and scheduled with SpaceMedia before you send it.

Most major streaming services do not let every artist upload music directly. A distributor like SpaceMedia delivers your audio, artwork, metadata, and rights information to supported platforms so your release can appear on services such as Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, Deezer, TikTok, and others.
Create an account, choose the plan that fits your needs, upload the final release files, review the details, and submit. SpaceMedia reviews Free submissions within 5 business days, Premium submissions within 2 business days, and Label submissions within 1 to 2 business days. Store publishing happens afterwards.
Independent music distribution lets artists release music to streaming, download, and social platforms without signing to a traditional record label. You stay in control of your music while using a distributor to deliver it to supported services.
With SpaceMedia, you can manage releases, artist details, earnings, and payout information from your account. All standard plans let users keep 100% of standard DSP royalties.
The Free plan lets artists release music without an upfront distribution fee and keep 100% of standard DSP royalties.
This gives new artists a way to start releasing music before paying for a yearly plan. Premium and Label add more primary-artist capacity and tools. All standard plans include 100% of standard DSP royalties.
Ja.
