YouTube Content ID for Musicians: What It Does and When to Use It

Every day people upload videos that use music: covers, edits, vlogs, dance videos and reaction clips. YouTube Content ID can find the videos that use your recordings and let you earn from them. It is a powerful tool, but only for music you fully control.
What Content ID does
When your recording is registered with Content ID, YouTube compares new and existing uploads with your audio. When it finds a match, a claim is placed on the video. Usually the video stays online and advertising revenue from it is shared with the rights owner. This lets you earn from fan videos you would never find on your own.
Content ID and YouTube Music are different
Distributing to YouTube Music puts your songs on YouTube's streaming service and creates your official tracks. Content ID is a separate service that monitors other people's videos. You can use streaming delivery without Content ID, but Content ID only makes sense for recordings you own outright.
Which songs are eligible
Only register music where you control all of the rights. Do not use Content ID for songs that contain:
- Uncleared samples.
- Non-exclusive or leased beats that other artists can also use.
- Royalty-free loops or sample packs.
- Public-domain recordings.
- Any material you do not fully control.
With non-exclusive material, Content ID could claim other people's videos that use the same beat or loop legitimately. Incorrect claims can lead to disputes and to account or release restrictions.
Protect your own channel
If you upload your own music videos or lyric videos, make sure your official channel is not claimed by your own Content ID. If it is, contact support so the claim can be released and your channel allowed.
Content ID with SpaceMedia
Content ID is available on SpaceMedia's paid plans and is not included with the Free plan. Check the pricing page for the current plan details. When you enable it for a release, make sure every element of the recording is yours or exclusively licensed to you.
Before you enable Content ID, ask yourself
- Did I or my collaborators create every sound in this recording?
- If I used a beat, do I have an exclusive licence that allows Content ID?
- Have my collaborators agreed to register the song?
If the answer to all three is yes, Content ID can turn fan videos into a new source of income. Read our guide to royalty splits if you share the song with others.

Most major streaming services do not let every artist upload music directly. A distributor like SpaceMedia delivers your audio, artwork, metadata, and rights information to supported platforms so your release can appear on services such as Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, Deezer, TikTok, and others.
Create an account, choose the plan that fits your needs, upload the final release files, review the details, and submit. SpaceMedia reviews Free submissions within 5 business days, Premium submissions within 2 business days, and Label submissions within 1 to 2 business days. Store publishing happens afterwards.
Independent music distribution lets artists release music to streaming, download, and social platforms without signing to a traditional record label. You stay in control of your music while using a distributor to deliver it to supported services.
With SpaceMedia, you can manage releases, artist details, earnings, and payout information from your account. All standard plans let users keep 100% of standard DSP royalties.
The Free plan lets artists release music without an upfront distribution fee and keep 100% of standard DSP royalties.
This gives new artists a way to start releasing music before paying for a yearly plan. Premium and Label add more primary-artist capacity and tools. All standard plans include 100% of standard DSP royalties.
Ja.
