How Release Radar, Discover Weekly and Spotify Radio Pick Songs

Most streams for independent artists do not come from editorial playlists. They come from playlists Spotify builds for each listener automatically: Release Radar, Discover Weekly, Daily Mixes, Radio and Autoplay. You cannot apply to them, but you can give them the signals they respond to.
The main algorithmic playlists
- Release Radar updates every Friday with new music from artists a listener follows or plays often. If you pitch your song in Spotify for Artists at least seven days before release, it becomes eligible for your followers' Release Radar.
- Discover Weekly updates every Monday with songs a listener has not heard, chosen from what similar listeners enjoy.
- Daily Mix, Radio and Autoplay continue listening sessions with songs that fit what the person just played.
The signals that matter
Spotify does not publish its formula, but it is clear about the behaviour it rewards: listeners who choose your music and come back to it.
- Saves and playlist adds. A listener saving your song or adding it to their own playlist is one of the strongest signals.
- Repeat listens. People who play the song again over several days.
- Follows. New followers also receive your next release in Release Radar.
- Completed plays. A stream counts after 30 seconds, and many early skips tell the system the song was a bad match for that audience.
- Listening context. Who listens, and which other artists they play, decides where you are recommended next.
What helps a new release
- Pitch every release before release day, even if you do not expect an editorial placement, to reach Release Radar.
- Send your own fans first. Your existing listeners save and replay at a higher rate than strangers, which gives the song a strong start. A pre-save link turns announcements into saves on day one.
- Get the first seconds right. Long intros lead to early skips. If the song needs an intro, keep it short.
- Release regularly. A new song every six to eight weeks keeps you in your followers' Release Radar and gives the algorithm more data.
- Tag the pitch accurately. Correct genre and mood information helps Spotify test the song with the right audience.
What quietly hurts
- Untargeted ads and paid placements that bring listeners who skip. The streams count, but the signals are poor.
- Bot playlists and bought streams. They distort your audience data, can lead to removed streams and fees, and can get releases taken down. Read about artificial streaming.
- Splitting your catalogue across several spellings of your artist name, which splits your followers too.
How to read your data
In Spotify for Artists, open the song's statistics and look at the source of streams. If "Your profile and catalogue" is most of it, your fans are carrying the song. Growth in "Listener's own playlists and library" and algorithmic playlists means it is spreading. A song that has saves from a small group of real listeners is a better base than a song with many streams and no saves.
