Independent playlists, run by fans, blogs, labels and DJs, are one of the best ways to reach new listeners outside Spotify's own playlists. They are also where most fake streams come from. The skill is not finding playlists; it is finding the ones with real listeners.

Where to find curators

  • Search Spotify for your genre and mood. Look for playlists with a clear theme, a description and recent updates. Many list a contact address or a social handle in the description.
  • Look at similar artists. Check where artists one level above you are playlisted. Their "Discovered on" section on Spotify shows playlists that reached their listeners.
  • Blogs, radio shows and labels often run playlists that accept submissions.
  • Submission platforms where you pay for a curator to listen and respond. Use only services that charge for consideration and feedback, never for a guaranteed placement or a number of streams.

How to check that a playlist is real

  • Followers versus activity. A playlist with 80,000 followers whose songs barely move is a warning sign.

  • Keep it under 100 words. No follow-up for at least a week, and only once.

After a placement

  • Thank the curator and share the playlist on your channels; curators notice artists who send listeners back.
  • Do not ask to stay on the playlist forever. Rotations are normal.
  • Note who added you, for your next release.
