Melis is a playful amateur based in Málaga, Spain. Most of his tracks fall into one of two categories. One is best described as synthpop with elements of chill or techno. These tunes have repetitive vocals, and include Little Places Inside My Head, Let’s Keep Dancing, Warp Speed, A House by the Ocean, and perhaps Does It Matter To You? The other is the computer-inspired, synth heavy instrumentals. The Soppoppia trilogy is a prime example, where all songs are inspired by old computer games. Other tunes are sometimes close to these two categories, sometimes not at all; Waking Up in Varsity falls somewhere just in between, made as a dreamy tribute to Camp Varsity at Burning Man. The Hunt dives into the techno universe, and differs production-wise from the rest, as it is entirely made up of sound samples, with no notes or “real” composing. Sinnerman is the only remake of an existing song, balancing on the copyright borderlines to previous versions of the African-American spiritual classic. The producer describes making music as a way for him to enter a dream-like state of creative flow: “I use music production as a form of mindfullness, getting in the flow, not thinking of anything else for a few hours. It’s something I enjoy, something that I do for myself.” Melis (his childhood nickname in Norway) began experimenting with music in 2018. Perhaps he will create more music in the future.
