On “I’ve got answers I need questioned”, the debut single from ACTIVATOR, you can hear Shawna crying towards the climax of the song. “It is the most vulnerable song on the record. I couldn’t make it through one take without bawling. And it’s wild because people say it’s a banger and I’m all ‘well it’s super bleak and it makes me cry,” Shawna says. Shawna is a trans woman and grew up a Southern Baptist preacher’s kid in rural Alabama. Not being seen for who she was led Shawna to have strong sense of rebellion. It made her feisty. And being naturally hyper along with her angst made her want to be on stage inspiring a cultural rebellion. Essentially, Shawna’s debut album, Activator, is a symbol of resiliency and victorious self-reclamation. She was in such a dark place for so long. Her life seemed to be full of crises and it seemed to always get worse. Thankfully, Shawna always held on to that tiny percent chance there was way out alive.
