Music from the Sole is an 8 piece ensemble of tap dancers and musicians that blends the jazz, hip hop, and psychedelia of my own musical origins with the afro-Brazilian background of my co-artistic director and choreographer Leonardo Sandoval. The first single, Samba do Sol, presents the original composition from the live show while attempting to adapt the visual elements of tap dance and body percussion into an audio-only experience.
The world of percussive dance is relatively new to me - I grew up in a musical family with church roots, home-schooled on guitar and bass. After moving to New York City at age 20, I caught my first big professional break playing with the indie band Darwin Deez which would soon be signed to a British label and begin touring abroad. In a twist of fate, I was actually hired to play drums - definitely based more on good interpersonal vibes than on skills - and began practicing nonstop, focusing only on grooving while playing zero impressive drum fills.
Serendipitously, multiple members of that band were also professional tap dancers, and their project, Dorrance Dance, became one of the world's vanguard tap dance companies while giving me the opportunity to grow as a composer. We released the album “Myelination” in 2017 under the moniker Prawn Til Dante.
Other releases include Pillow Royale/O.A.M.F. and Get Up Trinity, a small collection of electronic music that represents my love for dance music and club culture.
