A legendary South African Jazz trumpet and flugelhorn player has been playing the Jazz circuit for more than 65 years. The son of a gold miner, Charlie started playing the trumpet at the age of 16. Two years later his love for the sound of Jazz took hold. Besides playing on TV and radio shows, Charlie accompanied many visiting international artists such as Marlene Dietrich, Liberace, Herb Ellis, Blue Mitchell, Gheorghe Zamfir, Sarah Vaughn, John Mehegan,the West Coast Jazz Group and Lovelace Watkins to name a few. He played on the same billing as Dizzie Gillespie and Frank Foster at a Jazz festival in Lesotho, Southern Africa. The highlight was spending some private time with Dizzie and studying with Frank Foster. An afternoon was spent with Frank discussing music under the hot African sun. Travelled to America where he played with Richie Cole in Jazz clubs and at Music Festivals. Also toured Europe where he played in various restaurants, at the Galicia Music Festival and Route 66 Jazz Club in Spain. With his colorful and spontaneous personality, Charlie has been a pillar of local Jazz and continues to assist local musicians.
