Since 2016 Philadelphia artist Bobby Brown has been producing chameleonic pop under the name Rentboy. After his 2022 house-forward LP ‘Memory Forever’, his crew threw a multi-city series of gallery-hopping barn burners under the title Sexy Dance Punk Spring that culminated in the release of 2023's "Get Worse!”, an EP of sonically-distorted, diamond-flecked garage rock recalling late 2000s tumblr favorites like the Drums and Sleigh Bells. Brown sees his latest single "Real America" as a natural follow-up, the first in a series of singles heralding an aggressive, insistent approach to pushing through cool to something more fun and unafraid. To bring the single to life, Brown drew inspiration from award-winning poet and queer Philadelphia icon CAConrad's book "While Standing in Line for Death", hoping to “channel the frustration of being inevitably American by birth”, as he puts it, over a minimalist, insistent bassline that wouldn't sound out of place on an ESG song.
