Classically trained multi-instrumentalist Dave Zagar records experimental electronic music and classical soundscapes as Shortwave. The project began as an endeavor to score the 2017 solar eclipse in real-time, using only a drum machine and a synthesizer. This concept quickly turned into his self-released debut record 'Phased', an album composed live during the sunrise, sunset, and full moon on Zagar's apartment rooftop in Chicago. Atmospheric and serene, yet rhythmic and punchy, 'Phased' incorporates elements of 70s psychedelia, krautrock, minimalism, and modern classical works. His latest release, "Frozen Waves", is a classical/experimental score written for drone footage of Lake Michigan in the winter— a collaboration with his brother and videographer Andy Zagar. The idea was to honor their hometown of Muskegon, Michigan and its beauty in the cold months. The music incorporates samples of the ice, moving water, and crisp air blended with several layers of violin, piano, and guitar. Zagar writes, produces, records, and performs every instrument himself.
