Big Burn, born Matthew Murnan in Nebraska City, NE in 1985, gravitated towards Hip-Hop in his early teens. He was drawn to artists who possessed intricate lyricism such as Eminem and Tech N9ne. Within a couple years after moving to Omaha for college in 2004, he started rapping for fun. After years of honing his craft, he recorded his debut album, Invidious, with local Music Video Director, Aaron Gum. It was released on November 14th, 2013 and featured Surreal the MC . Soon after Big Burn released a music video for the lead single, Milkshake. It garnered thousands of views and was fervently shared on social media by the widely lauded rap group, The Palmer Squares. With his earlier content being mostly comedic, Big Burn has been compared to The Lonely Island. However, with his 2nd album, “Do geese see God?” he began to make more introspective material. Jason Randall Smith (contributing writer for the AVClub) wrote in his review for the lead single, “Musings”. "While it’s easy to place Matthew in the context of new school nihilist boom bap like Odd Future, his introspective lyricism also recalls the emotive moments from the Rhymesayers Entertainment collective, particularly members such as Atmosphere or P.O.S" In 2024 Big Burn had 7 songs remixed/remastered and released them in a playlist called, “A Hodgepodge of Old Bangers - Remixed & Revived.” He’s performing live again, still pushing his pen, and plans on making music as long as he has the passion to do so.
