Damien Lawson, a native of Monroe, Louisiana who moved to Los Angeles, California during his early twenties, competed on The Voice in 2014, during the singing competition's seventh season. A mature R&B vocalist with gospel roots, Lawson had performances on the Christian talent program Gifted on his résumé when he auditioned for The Voice. He introduced himself to the Voice judges with a faithful version of "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye"; before he completed the song's first line, three of the four judges wanted to be his coach. Lawson opted to go with Adam Levine and went on to perform a ballad-heavy mix of songs popularized by the likes of LeAnn Rimes, Sam Smith, the Hollies, and Michael Jackson.
