At the reamarkably early age of fourteen (possibly seventeen) Jullien was appointed as the organist to Chartres Cathedral. Upon his death, his eldest son succeeded him. The majority of Jullien's music was composed for the organ and that which survives is contained in his "Premier livre d'orgue." Notably he learned his craft well and was acquainted with the Parisian organ techniques of the day. The book consists of eighty pieces in eight different sets. Fugue orientation was not part of the seventeenth and eighteenth century French concern and little was present in Jullien's music. That which was fugally oriented demonstrated a minimal amount of development, no expansion, and very few references, if any, to an original thematic device. His duos, preludes and compositions for solo stops were more successfully written. Jullien rarely took a chromatic leap; when he did the results were sad. "Premier livre d'orgue" was much more of an anthology than it was a proper sequential arrangement of consecutive pieces. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
