Khemadasa was born into a humble family in Talpitiya, Wadduwa, and was the thirteenth children of the family. Despite the family's limited means, Khemadasa's musical talent was evident from a young age. He began teaching himself to play on makeshift bamboo flutes at just six years old. Khemadasa's entry into film composition came with Sirisena Wimalaweera's "Roddie Kella." His score for "Bambaru Ewith" introduced a fresh style to Sri Lankan cinema, earning him critical acclaim. He collaborated with director Lester James Peries on films like "Golu Hadawatha" and "Nidhanaya," earning the title of "Khemadasa Master." In addition to film, Khemadasa composed symphonies like "Muhuda" and "Sinhala Avurudda." He also created a cantata, "Pirinivan Mangalya," believed to be the only Buddhist cantata ever composed. Khemadasa was a pioneer in Sri Lankan opera, composing works like "Manasawila" and "Doramandalawa" in Sinhalese. Khemadasa's contributions to Sri Lankan music are immeasurable. He introduced new styles and forms, inspiring generations of musicians. Khemadasa passed away on October 24, 2008, at 71, leaving behind a legacy of creative and innovative music. His work remains a testament to his dedication to his craft, and he is remembered as a true innovator in Sri Lankan music.
