Growing up in Wiltshire, Gus’s first exposure to music was learning to sing as a chorister, before discovering rock music and playing in bands at school. During this time, Gus began to discover artists such as Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell and Neil Young, and quickly shifted his focus away from the electric guitar toward the acoustic. In 2013 he moved to Belfast to study Music Technology and Sonic Arts at the prestigious Sonic Arts Research Centre at Queen’s University. Whilst studying, he was introduced to the strong underground Irish folk scene, spearheaded by artists such as Joshua Burnside & Mark Loughrey. His time at university allowed him to experiment sonically. In 2017 Gus release his debut EP entitled True Really Do Come Dreams, inspired by a dream diary that he kept at the time. Whilst deeply rooted in Gus’s warm acoustic sound, his EP experimented with acousmatic elements and electronic samples, all of which were exemplified by his quadraphonic live show that he toured around the UK that year. Moving to London in September 2017 to further his studies at Goldsmiths University, Gus quickly became exposed to London’s booming Folk, Roots and Jazz scenes. He began collaborating with a variety of musicians such as Brazilian guitarist Raphael Gimenes, Jazz ensembles Fake Party and Vellichor, and singer-songwriters Laura Frances and Kristin McFadden. A long period of songwriting and performing with Kristin led to the genesis for much of Gus’s musical output this year.
