Vathres is an experimental post-rock collective based in Stockholm, Sweden. It was initiated in 2020 by Alex Zethson, a keyboardist who has been heard with Fire! Orchestra, Angles 9, Mariam The Believer, Sven Wunder, Goran Kajfes Tropiques and in his own projects such as Alex Zethson Ensemble and Yokada. For the debut album "Liturgy of Lacuna", Zethson gathered 14 musicians from the scenes of experimental music, jazz, avant rock and metal – among them Christian Augustin (Cult of Luna), Gustaf Hielm (who has played with Pain of Salvation, Mats/Morgan, Tiamat and Chaosphere-era Meshuggah), Reine Fiske (Dungen) and Goran Kajfeš. The album was reviewed in The Wire's October '23 issue, where Misha Farrant wrote: "Changes appear gradually, with only a few sudden movements. Listening to it I feel as I've been knocked off my feet and am no longer making contact with the ground despite the heavier frequencies; the various bass instruments occupying the space create a passage of weighted air between my limbs and the ground. [...] Despite the album's dense mass of instrument and players, Zethson and co-producer Anton Toorell find space for them all."
