Memphis collective Nonconnah creates haunting soundscapes and collages primarily using obsolete recording equipment. Releases such as 2021's Songs for and About Ghosts are filled with shoegaze guitars, field recordings, grainy samples, and acoustic instrumentation, arranged into dreamlike sequences. Married couple Denny Wilkerson Corsa and Zachary Corsa initially started making music as Lost Trail when they were living in Burlington, North Carolina. Between 2011 and 2017, they released over 50 recordings on labels such as Reverb Worship, Already Dead Tapes, and Illuminated Paths. They changed their project's name to Nonconnah when they relocated to Tennessee, and collaborated with additional musicians more frequently, but they continued producing lo-fi dreamscapes filled with distorted, backwards guitars and found audio. Nonconnah's first release, Winter EP, appeared on long-running experimental label Silber Records in 2016. Debut album The Gloom & the Glowing was released by Custom Made Music in 2017, and received positive press from several websites. Following a few additional EPs and limited releases, Nonconnah issued Dead Roses, Digged Up Zombies, Broken Pieces of Diamonds, Live Cats on Ernest Jenning Record Co. in 2019. The ambitious full-length included collaborations with Dustin Wong, Dan Friel, Greg Saunier of Deerhoof, cellist Lori Goldston, and several other notable musicians. A digital collection of outtakes titled Seek Not Your Fortune was also released that year. The improvised performance Massachusetts Graves and an EP titled Transcription of Headstones both appeared in 2020. In 2021, Nonconnah issued Songs for and About Ghosts, a sprawling full-length featuring string arrangements by Owen Pallett and synths played by Jenn Taiga. ~ Paul Simpson, Rovi
