The band's new sound direction started with NOTHING IS AS IT WAS EP (2021) & continues with this album. Kathryn’s fascination with her wah pedal, desire to dance and her eclectic music collection from Talking Heads to ELO, Kate Bush to Concrete Blonde, Joni Mitchell to The The, and PJ Harvey informed both her vocal style, songwriting and composition. Albert delved into his accumulated musical and songwriting prowess for his bass interpretations. “Every bass line is a melody.” 5 Miles Out~ lead vocalist Kathryn Sutherland’s longing vocals, tremolo and rhythm electric guitar tracks, with bassist Albert Klassen’s disco and funk bass lines and Dan Ponich’s driving drums, pertinent lead guitar lines, and expansive soundscapes. Albert played mandolin on Listen to the Birds , Song of the Crawdad, and My Alice Moment where a capo, zap-strap, and slide were used the hair-tie didn’t make the cut. Kathryn added an iphone voice memo recording to the opening of Tiny Room. The recording is one of many Racing Flames music sessions Kathryn had with her 2 sons in their younger lives.
