Peter Head began playing piano professionally at age 13 with Adelaide’s first rock’n’roll band – Johnny Mac and the Macmen. He co-founded progressive rock band Headband that released 3 singles and an album featuring Sydney Symphony players with a 110 piece children’s choir, touring with The Rolling Stones and Elton John. After Headband split in 1974 Peter launched the Mount Lofty Rangers, a country rock supergroup with an evolving cast of over 200 musicians that included Bon Scott (AC/DC). Shifting focus to a solo career, he released the ’The King Of The Cross’ EP - inspired by the shadowy world of Abe Saffron - although he earned the nickname for himself after becoming a staple fixture entertaining nightly in iconic Kings Cross nightclubs. An updated version of his original 1973 recording of ‘Round & Round & Round’, featuring Bon Scott, was released in 1986 creating much buzz worldwide. ‘In The Key Of Night’ (2004), captured Peter in late night solo mode on grand piano, featuring distinctive interpretations of tunes by Leonard Cohen, Ray Charles, Tom Waits, Randy Newman, Professor Longhair and Bob Dylan. ‘The Apple Don’t Fall Far From The Tree’(2013), ‘a charming, smoky blues romp’ (The Australian) with daughter Lo Carmen, highlights Head’s ‘elegant and melodious playing’(The Music). In 2016 Peter was inducted into the South Australian Music Hall Of Fame and in 2017 he released New Masters, Vol. 1.
