Of all the late great Sam Mehran's many and varied musical projects, perhaps the most unique was Outer Limits Recordings. Following in the footsteps of lo-fi luminaries like R Stevie Moore and Ariel Pink, Sam's output as Outer Limits Recordings draws upon a diverse mix of glam, power pop, krautrock, psychedelia, hard rock and everything in-between. Armed with just a 4-track recorder and an extraterrestrial brain brimming with ideas, Sam synthesised his influences into the perfect alien pop music that positively shimmers with the joyous pulse of life itself. The years spanning 2007 to 2010 were a busy time for Sam. Shortly after the split of infamous dance-punk trio Test Icicles, he set off on his next musical adventure. Several singles and self-released cassettes distributed amongst friends were released, as well as the first full-length LP Foxy Baby, recorded during a three-month stay in Berlin. Much of the music from this period was later compiled on Singles, Demos & Rarities (2007-2010). Another compilation of previously unheard material, Birds Bees Babys Bacteria, followed shortly after. Sam passed away in July of 2018 at the age of 32 but his memory lives on through his vast and eclectic discography and the release of the posthumous Cold Brew record has seen a renewed interest in his music. Although just one chapter in his story, the music he released as Outer Limits Recordings stands as a testament to a truly unique talent and a light that shone exceptionally bright.
