Long one of the most innovative and influential DJs on the West Coast club circuit, Doc Martin began spinning house records in San Francisco in 1986, quickly winning a cult following among warehouse party denizens for his eclectic tastes and skill at mixing the crowd with the music. After several years of masterminding epic eight-hour sets at clubs including Flammable Liquid and Sunday Love, Martin relocated to Los Angeles, where he soon took up residency at the Metropolis. By the mid-'90s, he was also the first West Coast DJ to hold a number of residencies in New York, appearing at clubs including the Roxy, Twilo and the Tunnel; also a favorite among London crowds, he regularly spun sets at venues including Cream, Back to Basics and Lakota. In 1996 Martin contributed the fifth volume in the United DJ's of America compilation, followed later that year by Unlock Your Mind. A series of 1997 EPs preceded the release of The House Music Movement a year later. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi
