GIYA is an artist of many faces; a producer, singer-songwriter, and the bass player for Hak Baker, she believes in art from within. Born and bred in South London, she’s intimately in touch with the city’s contours, whether she's reciting tales of drunken debauchery, or giving an inner glimpse into the mental health crisis and youth culture, GIYA uses music to locate a path towards the truth. Merging the skilful wordplay of her hip hop heroes, with folk inflections, soulful vocals and pop melodies, she has quickly built something profound and honest, a sound that is intimately her own. With her 2023 single, junk house, about her time living in Brighton, garnering 80,000 streams in just 4 months, her ability to simultaneously draw beauty and darkness out of a song widely resonated with her ever growing fanbase, with Wonderland noting, “she captures youth culture’. With lyrics that have a tendency to draw you in, and then punch you in the gut, her unique style has won her plaudits across the industry, from playing Glastonbury, to being championed by Jess Izsatt on BBC Radio 1, and also topping off the year supporting Hak Baker at KOKO last September, GIYA is rearing her new project CURRENTS for release this year, with a plethora of recipients yearning for her next move.
