The Birnam Witch Project

Storm in a Teacup

Let Them Eat Fishcake

Biography

Formed at the start of the new millennium by Inge Thomson (b. Scotland; accordion, percussion, vocals), Sarah McFadyen (b. Scotland; fiddle/vocals), Nuala Kennedy (b. Dundalk, County Louth, Eire; flute, whistles, vocals), Eilidh Shaw (b. Scotland; fiddle/vocals), and Ross Martin (b. Scotland; guitar), this Gaelic folk band brought together five of the most talented young Scottish and Irish folk musicians of their generation. The quintet's 2002 debut, Let Them Eat Fishcake, was divided equally between instrumental and vocal numbers and acted as a showcase for the players' youthful enthusiasm. Released in 2005, the follow-up, The Birnam Witch Project, was more rounded and sophisticated while still crackling with the terrific energy of the band's live outings. The members' outside projects include Kennedy's work with Anam and Fine Friday and McFadyen's involvement with Scottish indie pop band Aberfeldy. (NB: Not to be confused with the Canadian heavy rock band of the same name.)
