Sanni Est is the winner of the German Jazz Prize '23 Artist of the Year. She is originally from Brazil and moved to Berlin in 2007. Her work blends her early classical music education with electronica and African-Brazilian ritualistic drumming which she grew up playing and dancing to. Her second studio album Photophobia premiered as a full-immersion exhibition with 3D animation, Virtual Reality and digital film at Kampnagel in Hamburg on March 2022. Her multilayered artworks entangle etymological research with autobiography and collaborations question notions of humanity and unravel eurocentric gender-binary patterns. Refusing to restrain her voice, Sanni’s music combines exploratory vocal techniques which surpass formal education, creating worlds for gender-non-conforming people to confide in. The artist has performed in renowned institutions such as Hebbel Am Ufer, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Festsaal Kreuzberg (Berlin), WORM (Rotterdam), Weltmuseum Wien (Vienna), Teatro Oficina Uzyna Uzona (São Paulo).
