The Sound of Mr. Wiggles

The Sound of Mr. Wiggles

Biography

Born Alexander Randolph in Richmond, VA, in 1937, Mr. Wiggles honed his performing skills as a youngster with the Ben Cotton Theater Company in Newark, NJ. By the late 1950s, he had adopted the stage name Mr. Wiggles and was touring the coast as a performer and novelty salesman. His career eventually shifted toward the music business. Between 1964 and 1966, he founded Sound of Soul, releasing records by Little Tommy, Dickie Wonder, and Sebastian Williams. During this time, he also recorded a series of Mr. Wiggles tracks that remained largely unreleased for decades. In 1967, Randolph adopted the alias Dickie Diamond and began booking acts like Sly and The Family Stone, The Dells, The Delfonics, The Moments, and Patti Labelle and The Bluebelles – whom he also managed. In the 1970s, under the name August Moon, he produced "Seven Minutes of Funk" by Tyrone Thomas And The Whole Darn Family, which was sampled by numerous artists including Jay-Z, Kurtis Blow, Grandmaster Flash, Brandy, Wu-Tang, and Busta Rhymes. He continued to be active in the music industry throughout the 1980s, producing hip-hop records and becoming a social justice activist. An aneurysm in 1998 left Moon wheelchair-bound, but it never dampened his spirit. He passed away in 2023, leaving a lasting impact on his hometown of Richmond and beyond.
