Adrift in the musical cosmos, somewhere between the constellations of Hip Hop, Electronica and Experimental Rock exists Alphabethead; a producer and turntable musician from New Zealand. Alphabethead is known around New Zealand from his many festival and club shows. An innovative producer who cut his teeth in the hip-hop battle scene, delving into a diversity of sounds like orchestral gamelan, Inuit folk music, post-punk and krautrock. Alphabethead began DJing and producing at the age of 15 and his first few years in music were dedicated entirely to the world of DJ Competitions and Turntablist showcases. He was the Wellington DJ Champion three years running and at the age of 18 won the New Zealand DMC DJ Championship. His attraction to the turntable was the glorious sound of scratching and the endless sampling possibilities that manipulation of sound on vinyl offers. A Hip Hop producer's colour palette is essentially the entire recorded history of music! As a soloist he still gigs around New Zealand regularly and has released six albums of instrumental Hip Hop. His albums and live set are experimental, multi-genre affairs and assembled with an abundance of scratching and trick mixing. Alphabethead has done production work and played a single turntable in live bands touring New Zealand, Australia and China and playing at events such as Womad, Splore, Laneway and The International Jazz Festival.
