Biography

Led by twin sisters Jacqui and Pauline Soho along with guitarist, singer, producer Timothy London, Soho had a brief moment in the international limelight in the early '90s with the single "Hippychick." The sisters were born in the town of Wolverhampton, in England. In the early '80s, they began singing together while working as student nurses in St. Albans. When they met London, along with early members Mr X, DJ Freeze, Liam Gillick and Dukey D, they began playing together under a variety of names until finally they settled on Soho. The band landed a contract with HEDD/Virgin in 1987, where they secured their first club hit with the single "Piece Of You." Unfortunately, HEDD closed shop due to "financial irregularity" soon after the release of the band's debut full-length, resulting in 1989's contract with Savage Tam Records and the departure of Dukey D. Their second single for the label was "Hippychick," (from the album Goddess) which sampled the guitar from the Smiths' "How Soon Is Now." The single took off, both in America and Europe, and the band hit the road indefinitely, both on their own and with Jesus Jones. They released one more album for Savage Tam (Thug) before the label folded in 1992, though it failed to achieve the same level of commercial success as its predecessor. London and Jackie had a child in 1993, and the band endured a brief slowdown, as well as frequent lineup and label changes, though they continued to record new material well into the new millennium. ~ Bradley Torreano, Rovi
