Biography

I grew up in an urban environment, roughly 90 miles south east of LA, the Inland Empire. Funk, jazz and rock music of the late 60’s and early 70’s as the constant soundtrack of my childhood. All this morphed into becoming a new wave, art-punk musician by my early twenties. But that funk and jazz influence remained as the backbeat to much of everything I did, in whatever form of music I embraced. Whether it be in the 80’s with the Electro New Wave band Freaks Amor, or the folk oriented grooves of The Blue Box. Even my performance poetry period in San Francisco in the late 80’s was fused with groove and avant-jazz leanings. After moving to Austin in the late 90’s, I met and started interacting with guitarist Willie Oteri and trumpeter Dave Laczko. I invested in a synth and cut my improv teeth with Willie, Dave and eventually Joshua Thomson on Sax. The four of us played out pretty regularly 2012-14 as WD41+. In this period took on the mantel of Lost Cat Magnet and started composing again with *Production Unit Xero and gravitated to a more hybrid electro-prog sound. I had always held Brian Eno’s work with David Byrne, Marcus Miller’s work with Miles Davis and Jon Hassell’s world-beat jazz dreamscapes as the pinnacle of what I wanted to achieve. I set out in 2015 to commit Lost Cat Magnet to creating my own hybrid of electronic based, outsider noise and funk-jazz, heavily fused with a cinematic sense of storytelling.
