Biography

Born in Iran, Leila and and her family moved to the Uk in the after the iranian revolution in '79. Having always played the piano, she also became interested in DJing during her university days and was hired to play with Björk on 1994's Debut tour . Leila graduated to live mixing for the second Björk LP, and began setting up her own home studio. Signed to Apex Twins Rephlex Records, she released the single Don't Fall Asleep in 1997 and the Like Weather album the following year. The "Sodastream" ep arrived in 1999 and in 2000 Leila released her moodier second album, Courtesy of Choice, on XL. Shortly after that album's release, she took a long break for family business . In spring 2008, it was announced that she'd signed to Warp Records heralding the arrival of Blood, Looms and Blooms, which was released that summer and featured contributions from Martina Topley Bird and Terry Hall as well as her usual collaborators . For 2012's U&I, Leila collaborated with Mt. Sims, who helped her take her music in a darker direction influenced by punk and hard-edged techno and featured the singles "welcome to your life" and "anyway" . In 2020 the Manchester based label Modern Love re-issued "Like Weather" who Leila felt had the same DIY, "music first" ethic that Leila likes for her music . ~ John Bush, Rovi
