Born on 16 April 1968 in Heidelberg, South Africa. Somerfaan grew up on a farm outside Heidelberg. He honed his musical talent thru playing percussion on Farm implements from a young age. Somerfaan co-founded the industrial band Battery-9 with his friend Paul Riekert in 1995. They caused a raucous in SA between 1995 - 2000 with their insane live performances, consisting of heavy guitars, distorted vocals & live action painting. Battery-9 produced four albums during this period & won the South African Music Award for Best Rock Album in 1998. The band achieved cult status. In 1999 Battery-9 supported Faithless & The Prodigy on their national tours. In 2000, Somerfaan decided to go Solo. His first album was created using n blend of vintage synths, drum machines, samples from field recordings and various guest performers.
