Biography

Yoke was formed in 1996 in New York City, part of the Eastern European diaspora that also included bands like Cooky Conspiracy, Interzona and Gogol Bordello. Singing in Russian and English, visual artist Ilias Muratov joined with guitarist Ilan Frid for their first, self titled album, fusing acoustic guitars and Afro-Caribbean rhythms with unique effects and arrangements inspired by an eclectic range of artists including Vladimir Vysotsky, Auktyon, Einsturzende Neubauten and Tom Waits. Later albums, Skora and Pora, added a horn section, arranged by late, great bass player Ruslan Khain and guest vocals by Trinadadian reggae artist Sheldon “Sharky” Williams. Yoke continues into the 21st century, recording, performing and traveling the world as the fates allow.
