Hailing from Pécs, a small-ish, but remarkably bustling university town in the south of Hungary, Andras Szirmai had quite a bunch of different influences growing up: drumandbass, breaks, hiphop, school radio parties, supporting international artists in Budapest clubs, later listening to grime and bassline house, et cetera. Out of this mixture comes his layered, bassline-heavy world that would hold his own even in street-level London – and indeed it does: since he started cooking up his own beats in 2007, he’s built himself quite a significant number of supporters. Think Kissy Sell Out, The Artful Dodger, Flava D and DJ Q – and also Rinse.FM, where he receives more and more airplay as his EPs come by. Solid shuffle, tight drums and intricate bass work is what Sirmo’s music is all about – sometimes romantic and playful, but more often than not it also includes darker and sicker affairs, minding dancefloor effectiveness at all times. Definitely someone to watch out for, especially if you’re into world-class UKG!
