Biography

Fogliano had a splendid reputation for his organ playing and harpsichord technique. Serving the Cathedral of Modena for most of his years (11479-1497, 1504-1548) he traveled little. It is thought that he was in Venice during the seven year gap but his whereabouts are not indicated except for the publication of some of his works in Venice. He also once traveled to Parma to try-out a new organ. Compositions by Fogliano included madrigals, motets, frottolas and ricercares. A characteristic of his frottolas includes parallel tenths between the highest and lowest voices with non-descript middle voices. In his madrigals he treated the voices equally and Fogliano's keyboard compositions employed imitation, figures and distinct melodic lines. Musical motifs or phrases were used discretely in his arrangements to achieve coherence and consistency. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
