Thomas Wally is an Austrian composer, whose works have been performed all over the world by renowned ensembles and orchestras like the Mondrian Ensemble, PHACE, Klangforum Wien, OENM, and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. His oeuvre has received numerous national and international prizes, including a second prize at the 2015 Toru Takemitsu Awards, and a prize of the City of Vienna, in 2016. His music is regularly broadcast on radio stations such as Ö1 (Austria), SRF 2 Kultur (Switzerland), Kulturradio RBB (Germany), and NHK (Japan). As a violinist, Thomas Wally has been playing with the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna State Opera Orchestra since 2001/02 on an ad hoc basis. He is also active in the contemporary music scene, performing with the string quartet ensemble LUX that he co-founded. Since 2012 Thomas Wally has lectured on historic composition techniques at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna; in October he was added as a Senior Lecturer for music theory, ear training, and analysis. In 2008 Thomas Wally completed his studies with honors at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna – with Dietmar Schermann, Erich Urbanner, Chaya Czernowin in composition and with Josef Hell for violin. In 2005/06 he studied composition at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki with Paavo Heininen.
