Fusing smooth guitar licks with bold hip-hop production, Jackie Faye’s sound occupies a space in alternative R&B that’s her own. Born and raised in Dallas, Jackie grew up at the cultural intersection between her Taiwanese-Korean heritage and her budding love for musical influences such as Erykah Badu, Jazmine Sullivan, Nicki Minaj, and even UGK. Combine all that with her southern roots AND her queer identity… you’ve got an anomaly of an artist with a voice that has yet to be seen or heard in today’s music industry. Her debut project CUNTRY illustrates this best – a fitting title for a collection of songs that’s both unapologetic and genre-bending. Released in June 2022 and featuring Jackie’s original guitar playing and songwriting, the 5 track EP feels like a kind of musical mission statement for who she is as an artist. The singer/rapper floats over each track with catchy melodies while delivering unabashed lyrics that speak to her journey as a queer Asian-American woman navigating both her professional life and an ever-changing music industry. In her own words, “When someone stumbles across the project, I want them to feel like damn when + where this did happen?” and there’s no doubt she achieved just that with a body of work that’s as much a breath of fresh air as it is a defiant roar.
