Baritone Benjamin Appl is celebrated by audiences and critics alike for a voice that ‘belongs to the last of the old great masters of song’ with ‘an almost infinite range of colours’ (Suddeutsche Zeitung), and artistry that’s described as ‘unbearably moving’ (The Times). Former Gramophone Award Young Artist of the Year in 2016, Appl signed exclusively to Sony Classical 2016-2021 and began a multi-album collaboration with Alpha Classics in 2021. He had the fortune of being mentored by D. Fischer-Dieskau. As recitalist, Appl has performed at Ravinia, Rheingau, Schleswig Holstein, and Edinburgh festivals and performed at major concert venues like Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, Wigmore Hall London, Het Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and the Musée de Louvre Paris. In equal demand as soloist on the world’s most prestigious stages and collaborates with leading orchestras around the globe. Recent highlights include Guglielmo Così fan tutte; three recitals at Park Avenue Armory with all three Schubert cycles; Bach’s Mass in B Minor with the Philadelphia Orchestra (Nézet-Séguin). In 2017 he performed in the internationally televised concert with Staatskapelle Dresden (Thielemann) and was recently honoured to have been invited by the Federal President of Germany to performed to German Chancellor Angela Merkel. This season, Appl filmed Winterreise for the BBC in the Swiss Alps in 2021, broadcast in 2022. Winterreise was also released on Alpha Classics in February 2022.
