Biography

Marie McLaughlin is a leading soprano based in England and has had a notable career in the world's leading opera houses. She has a particularly close connection to the Grand Theater in Geneva. There she has sung such operas as Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, Léhar's Die lustige Witwe, Kurt Weill's Aufstieg und Fall des Stadt Mahagonny, Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmelites, Mozart's Così fan tutte and Offenbach's Voyage to the Moon. She is particularly well known for her Mozart interpretations, having appeared as Susanna (Marriage of Figaro) and Zerlina (Don Giovanni) at the Salzburg Festival, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and London's Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. She has also sung Susanna and Ilia (Idomeneo) at the Vienna State Opera, and Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni) at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera. She also appears often at the Hamburg, Berlin, Lausanne, the Los Angeles Opera, Paris Opéra-Bastille, German State Opera Berlin, and Munich operas. She appeared as Gilda in Jonathan Miller's English National Opera production of Verdi's Rigoletto, in which the story was set with an American Mafia background. This performance, as well as her portrayal of Violetta in La Traviata, Micaëla in Carmen, and Susanna are available on video. Other operas in her repertory include Strauss' Arabella, La Bohème (as Musetta), and Smetana's The Bartered Bride. On the concert stage she has appeared with the leading orchestras and conductors of the world. After becoming well established in opera, she expanded her recital activities. She sang at Wigmore Hall in London; Harewood House in Aberdeen; Oxford; Barcelona; and other venues. On the international festival scene she has sung at the Toulouse, Ravinia, and Pacific Music Festivals. In addition to appearing in several song recital programs on Hyperion (including three entries in Graham Johnson's complete Schubert Lieder series) she has recorded several of her operatic roles, including Zerlina with Sir Neville Marriner on Philips and Despina with James Levine on Deutsche Grammophon.
