Though a ten year period in Schildt's life as an organist are undocumented he is known to have studied with his father and Crappius then with Sweelinck in Amsterdam from 1609 until about 1612. By 1623 he was the organist for the Hauptkirche in Wolfenbuttel, 1626 to King Christian IV in Copenhagen and from 1629 until his death he served at the Marktkirche in Hanover. Of the extant compositions by Schildt, only one was a vocal work the rest being scored for keyboard. "Herr Christ, der einig Gotts Sohn" is definitively derived from Sweelinck but Schildt's "Magnificat I, modi" distinguished his own personal style. It was set in five separate sections with chorale fantasias and ricercares. "Paduana Lachrymae" exhibits sensitive timbres but his chorale concerto, "Ach mein herzliebes Jesulein," his only surviving vocal work, was a hallmark piece considering his musical rendition of the text through paradigmatic expression and feeling. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
