Born in Burnley, England in 1968. He discovered the electric bass at 15, inspired by the sound of Jean Jacques Burnel of the Stranglers. In 1986 he moved to study at Swansea University in Wales. In 1988, he switched to Paris to study at the thriving CIM jazz school. Summer 1989 he decided to stay in France. In 1990 he performed in trio with Chet Baker’s pianist: Michel Grailler. He played in Nöel Akchoté’s first quartet with Julien Lourau and François Merville and took private bass lessons with Henri Texier, Pierre Michelot, Dave Holland, Gary Peacock and Ray Brown. In 1993 he formed a trio with pianist Edouard Ferlet winning a solo prize at the Defense jazz competition in Paris and going on to record Escale and Zazimut albums. In 1997 Gary Brunton started writing music. He formed a sextet « Brunt’Off » with Jean Charles Richard, Frédéric Norel, Luc Isenmann, Eric Löhrer and Edouard Ferlet. He has recorded and performed with many renowned musicians including American singer Sheila Jordan. In 2007 he formed a large ensemble « Pee Bee » with Swiss/Italian saxophonist Claudio Pallaro, recording four albums. In 2018 he formed « Night Bus » with Bojan Z and Simon Goubert. **** star review in DownBeat magazine in 2020. Second Trip was released in Spring 2021.
