From an early age, Omar Hakim’s affinity for rhythm was evident. He began playing the drums at the tender age of five and soon found himself performing in his father’s band, guided by his familial musical influence. Hakim’s breakout moment arrived in the 1980s when he garnered attention as the drummer and backup vocalist with Carly Simon. However, it was his association with the legendary band Weather Report in 1982 that elevated him to new heights. Embracing jazz fusion, Hakim’s dynamic drumming became an integral component of Weather Report’s sound. Over the course of three tours and contributions to three albums between 1982 and 1984, Hakim seamlessly blended his rhythmic prowess with the intricacies of jazz fusion, showcasing his extraordinary versatility. In 1983, Hakim’s presence became synonymous with David Bowie’s most commercially successful album, “Let’s Dance”, which was followed by his participation in the subsequent album, “Tonight”; in 1984.
