Biography

Folklore and futurism, graceful elegance and raw passion, virtuosic precision and spontaneous exploration – all merge together in the music of two-time Grammy nominated vocalist, songwriter and producer Sofia Rei. Her instinct has taken her on a circuitous route from early classical training and Argentinian folk music through the punk rock nightlife of Buenos Aires and later to New York where she’s fused those sounds with jazz, experimental music, pop, and electronica. Sofía earned a Master’s Degree in Jazz and Improvisation from the New England Conservatory (Boston, MA). She has released five critically acclaimed albums as a leader, four of which have earned an Independent Music Award for Best Album. Sofía has performed around the world in some of the most prestigious venues and festival stages including Carnegie Hall, Wien Konzerthaus and North Sea Jazz Festival. She has collaborated with artists such as John Zorn, Bobby McFerrin, Maria Schneider, Mike Patton, the Klezmatics and Susana Baca. Rei has been an advocate of South American culture through her work. She is currently a Professor at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute and teaches New Perspectives in Latin Music, a course she created that explores rhythmic training and the broad stylistic diversity of Latin American music.
