Biography

Wilfried Scharf is a pioneer, who has tried unremittingly to reactivate this once popular alpine instrument (Empress Sissi, Harry-Lime Theme out of the movie “The Third Man”, Tales of the Vienna Woods), which almost disappeared into oblivion in the Sixties, through his masterful playing. He performed in the major concert halls in the US and Canada, such as Avery Fisher Hall/New York, Roy Thomson Hall/Toronto and many others. He played with the Viennese Symphony Orchestra at the Bregenz Festival, designed a “Night in Vienna” with the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra in Phoenix/Arizona and was on tour with the Johann Strauss Ensemble in Japan, China and Spain. He was a soloist at concerts of the Symphony Orchestra St. Gallen, the Belgian National Orchestra, the Munich Radio Orchestra, the Dresden Philharmonie and the Orchestre National de France. The highlight was undoubtedly the appearance with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under Daniel Barenboim at the Viennese New Year’s concert 2014. He presented the Austrian zither at the “Chatkan Festival” in Abakan/Siberia and at the “Sounds of Eurasia” festival in UlanUde/Siberia and played a concert with a Balalaika orchestra in Yakutsk. Furthermore, he regularly gives concerts and workshops in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Japan and at the Gnesin Music Academy in Moscow. He teaches at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz and has released lots of sheet music for zither and CDs.
