Biography

The labyrinth of Saudade’s formation began in the early 80’s with Jaco Pastorius’ mentorship to Chuck Doom. Jaco’s premature death occurred during a nine month period in which Doom suffered the loss of 2 other profoundly influential people in his life. His loss catapulted him on a 30-year journey throughout the country from South Florida to Woodstock, NY to LA, and many places in between where he met the musicians and friends that would eventually form Saudade. John Medeski explains “it's a huge honor to be part of this project. The first real band I was ever in was with Chuck in the early 80s in Ft Lauderdale, FL. For this to be coming back around 38 years later is truly magical.” Dr. Know recalls working on Saudade songs right before his stroke and organ failure in 2015. Five years later, as he continues to recover, the collective has become a source of inspiration to play and record again. Cathy Pellow, owner / founder of Sargent House. recalls “I still remember the moment Chelsea (Wolfe) told me that Chino (Moreno) and Chuck had asked her to co-write and sing on a Saudade track. When I heard the final song and learned who the other players on it were I immediately felt a connection to it. I wanted to be involved in this collective. I’m excited for the future collaborations we still have yet to announce and for the ones that are now just still ideas. Saudade encompasses everything I grew up loving about music. They create it with no restrictions. Music is freedom. “
