Hoyoul: Sacræ cantiones

Hoyoul: Sacræ cantiones

Biography

Starting as a choirboy in the Wurttemberg Hofkapelle in Stuttgart, his voice broke when he was fifteen. He was allowed to study with Lassus in Munich because of his demonstrated musical aptitude. Hoyoul rejoined the court as an alto and composer. He wrote primarily arrangements for sacred music including the forms of masses, motets, and hymns. As a part of his responsibilities, Hoyoul compiled a thorough inventory of all the instrumetns and compositions within the musical library in Stuttgart. Hoyoul's motets were the most impressive work based on German chorale melodies followed by his Magnificat settings which parodied the works of Lassus. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
