Bay Area born rapper NAP’n Azz Rick was raised in Tacoma, Washington, but the rhythm and ism of the Bay never left him. As a young kid his older brother was the first to introduce him to rap music with a cassette tape of “My Opinion” by Mac Mall. After that there was no looking back; X Raided, Brotha Lynch Hung, C Bo, The Luniz, RBL Posse, Messy Marv, E-40, Mac Dre, Too Short and Richie Rich soon became played in regular rotation. These classic Bay Area rap roots shine through in his music today. Though Rick started recording his raps on a karaoke machine as a kid, the catalyst to him taking music serious was hearing artists from Tacoma on the Rainin Dope Compilation (1997); he then vowed to himself he would get his turn and be labeled as “one of the best to do it.” As a teenager Rick dropped out of high school in the ninth grade; his grind was intensified when at 25 he had his first child. The combination of being a father, a felony strike at the age of 20, and no high school diploma compelled Rick to hustle. These experiences are reflected in the stories he tells in his music. After over a decade of travelling back and forth from Tacoma to San Francisco to record, loyal to the soil that influences him, Rick is finally ready to share his music with the world with his debut solo album New Age Pimp’n (NAP’N Vol.1).
