Tauwhenua

TAUWHENUA

Biography

KOMMI is a Lyttelton, New Zealand based vocalist who performs exclusively in the Kāi Tahu dialect of te reo Māori. Swampy, witchy, dark and sometimes humorous. KOMMI is most known for their live stage performances alongside their band of personal Taipō (supernatural beings, spooks, goblins, or ghosts) . Their music incorporates rituals which acknowledge life and death, love and disdain, contentment, grief, and the absurd. The new EP ‘TAUWHENUA’ alongside producer Infectiouss is a cautionary tale around the carelessness of words, being hōhā (ridden with angst), being haunted, mākutu (witchcraft), and encounters with tūrehu (faeries). It also explores visions of death and escapism. KOMMI’s next full album project will contain SwampWitch hip-hop songs with an indigenous perspective commenting on governmental travesties and police injustices, and the horrors of what is happening in Falisteen, as well as further philosophical explorations into the metaphysical world and perhaps some sci-fi concepts. Turou hawaiki!
