Biography

Born in Shiraz, Iran, in 1977, Puya displayed an early interest in music, soon taking up the Setar. His passion for traditional Iranian musical modal systems led him to begin professional training at the age of fifteen, under the guidance of esteemed music masters. At twenty-two, Puya was accepted into the prestigious Art University of Tehran. During his tertiary education, he further refined his instrumental techniques and gained comprehensive knowledge in music theory, solfeggio, and composition. He founded the Mehr Ensemble in Tehran and, after migrating to Australia in 2006, continued his musical journey in Melbourne with like-minded musicians. In 2017, Puya earned a Graduate Diploma in Composition from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. His fascination with the human mind and psyche, coupled with his belief in the profound positive impact of music on mental well-being, led him to pursue studies at the University of Melbourne and the Institute for Social Neuroscience (ISN). He gained a BA and a Master of Professional Psychology (MPP) and is now a registered psychologist. Puya uses his dual expertise in music and psychology to create compositions that promote mental well-being, helping individuals improve their coping skills and resilience. His music is crafted to connect deeply with listeners on both a mental and emotional level, using the power of music to enhance mental health and well-being.
