Biography

Born in 1872, Eyvind Alnaes was a Norwegian composer, organist, and conductor. Following studies at the Christiania Music and Organ School and Leipzig Conservatory, he worked as an organist, his appointments including Drammen and Oslo. One of the founders of the Norsk Komponistforening (Society of Nordic composers), he participated in the Koralbokkomiteen. An active and productive member of this committee, Alnaes harmonized many melodies in the Norwegian Church's chorale book He received the King's Gold Medal and the Order of St. Olaf award for his efforts. His early compositions are in late-Romantic style but later works have impressionistic elements. His best works are vocal, both for solo voice and chorus; in these works, Alnaes, who seldom uses folk music, often relies on Scandinavian poetry for inspiration. His later orchestral music evinces an effort to transcend a Romantic idiom. Alnaes died in 1932.
