Biography

When Schroeter was born his family lived in London. He went to Leipzig where he studied under Hiller but his family kept their residence in London. When they finally returned to Leipzig, Schroeter had already returned to London and decided to stay there. He remained under the protection of Count Bruhl and came into the service of Queen Charlotte in 1782 when J.C. Bach died. Even when he had given up his public concert life Schroeter maintained semi-private performances in the home of the Prince of Wales (later George IV). Schroeter in important to music, particularly English music, as an instrumental force in bringing the piano to the attention of English audiences. Performances by Schroeter always contained extravagant techniques played with ease and grace. He amazed audience with the quickness with which he performed scintillating passages. Piano concertos by Schroeter expanded the repertoire and the popularity of the piano in England. These were the first piano concertos composed in England.
