Biography

Schné / vocals, guitar Mariska Nijhof / accordion and vocals David Jehn / double bass, vocals, mandolin Matthias Schinkopf / saxophone, clarinet, flute, percussion Ingo Höricht / violin, viola, guitar Michael Berger / piano One focus of the band is the setting of German-language poetry. The poems by Heine, Rilke, Brecht, Kästner, Hesse, Lasker-Schüler, Ausländer, Kaléko, Tucholsky, Fried and others are composed "classically" as strophic songs or in free form. In the process, the irregularity of the meter in some texts results in delightful breaks with all-too-obvious musical progressions, and the results are always surprising - for the musicians and the listeners alike. The Schné Ensemble is particularly fond of the texts of Else Lasker-Schüler, so much so that in 2012 they had the privilege of providing the musical framework for the presentation of the prestigious Else Lasker-Schüler Dramatist Prize in Mainz. The instrumental compositions of Mariska Nijhof and Ingo Höricht are a mixture of jazz, classical chamber music, klezmer and world music, and the songs/chansons/songs of Schné give the ensemble repertoire completely new contemporary accents. In addition, a very productive songwriting collaboration has developed between the band's lead singer and violinist: Ingo Höricht delivers compositions and Henrike Krügener writes the appropriate lyrics in the language she feels like at the moment. She knows how to do it.
